Natures Cradle's Blog

Just another WordPress.com site

Our first little Nature’s Cradle store was opened what feels like a lifetime ago. Through this time we have evolved, grown incredibly, and have walked along a windy path of new ideas and changes. After all, we were a ground breaking Retail Store, never before in Australia had there been an Organic Baby Store focusing on a large range of Modern Cloth Nappies and Baby-wearing Carriers and Slings, so the path we were to make was completely our own.

We are now entering another curve on our path, one which we have dabbled with in the past. But it has recently become apparent how much this path fits in with our very original goals and dreams, our ‘heart song’ as some may call it. This new direction has had me reflecting on our past, and how we have consistently made our decisions according to this ‘heart song’.

When I reflect over our history at Nature’s Cradle, while we have grown and changed, there has been one major consistency, and that is that everything we do must resonate with what is in our hearts. Every decision we have made, has been with the intention of doing what feels right, feels good, feels ethical. When we choose brands to stock, one major consideration has always been ethics, we need to feel good about what we present to our Customers. When we choose locations, we consider what would be most convenient for our Customers, it must offer great off street parking for Mothers and Babies, and allow us to offer that little bit more such as workshops or local facilities. When we renovate we want to take care of the environment so we recycle, use natural light, low VOC paints, Eco Friendly Flooring. Everything we do must feel good to our souls.

When I opened my first little store, baby in arms, my main intention was to –
“Make it easy for parents to find natural products for their babies, thus giving more babies a better chance at a natural start to life.”

Originally, starting a little store, we intended to open stores all over Australia, with the main aim to reach more parents. I have come to realise over the years, particularly being a parent myself, that it is not always convenient, or easy, to get to a particular store, especially if you are not in that direct vicinity. As we want to reach babies far and wide, we have come to realise that a team of ‘Nature’s Cradle Consultants’ is the way to reach more people, in more convenient ways.

So we have re-entered this curve in the path, the one started on a few years ago, but now we are going all the way. It took a heartbeat to start several Consultants already, and I am enjoying this journey with them immensely.

I must say, this is probably as, if not more, exciting than opening a new store. The possibilities to reach more parents this way, is endless. We are also giving so many parents across Australia an opportunity to represent products that make their hearts sing, as well as being able to have their own career while being able to look after their children, on their own terms.

This is the new way of Nature’s Cradle, while we love our beautiful store, this path will allow us to fulfil our dreams and really make our Hearts Sing!

Hug a Bub PocketlessThis week on Facebook, we have a competition, to offer a free Hug a Bub, which is a beautiful Australian Made baby Wrap Carrier.

There has been much excitement, which is lovely. After all we did offer this due to customer requests. However, what has been most wonderful, is watching the customer interactions. We have seen parents helping each other out when they have been unable to ‘tag’ themselves in photos to enter the competition. They have been hopping in and offering advice before we could get there, and offering to tag others if somebody was having difficulty. There have also been supportive conversations, such as one about Premature Babies. All of that support, and connection, over a competition! Connection and support is what Nature’s Cradle is about, so it makes us feel wonderful to see it happen before our eyes on our Facebook page.

We are drawing the winner next Tuesday, we only wish that we could give many out so that everybody could experience the feeling of a Wrap Carrier like the Hug a Bub

The Hug a Bub Wrap Carrier may look like a very long piece of fabric, but such simplicity provides the most comfort for baby and adult. This Wrap Carrier is so comfortable, that it is the first one we recommend if a customer has a back issue. It is the only Carrier to completely cover your back, and both shoulders, so well that it feels like you are wearing a baby tucked in a tight t-shirt. While the fabric may look long, it really takes only 30 seconds to tie up, and you can keep it on when you take baby out if you are going to wear it again later, because it does look a lot like a piece of clothing.

The beauty of the Hug a Bub is the way it feels. For the Wearer, it makes carrying baby practically weightless. This is due to the baby being held up against your body, rather than hanging off you like other carriers. For baby, they are getting full support, very much like being held in your arms but even more supportive as the fabric wraps accross their back and under their body. These are really helpful to calm restless babies and babies suffering with Colic, they will often happily sleep for hours in a Wrap Carrier.

For me personally, being able to snuggle a baby up in a Wrap Carrier is one of the most enjoyable parts of having a little bubs. They feel so warm, so settled, so happy against you. A warm little snuggled ball tucked right against my chest, and then when you pull the warm little body out, baby is still curled up rested, it is so adorable. I am so looking forward to experiencing that again, hopefully in about 8 months time.

We look forward to seeing who the lucky winner is!

We have had so much going on at Nature’s Cradle in the last few months!

  • Our website was relaunched: http://www.naturescradle.com.au , our beautiful new website has so many features including a Member Section, Product Reviews, and a big resource of articles and information for Parents and Families wanting to live more naturally, see http://www.naturescradle.com.au/Parent-Resources.aspx.
  • Nature’s Cradle has hosted many events including our week long Charity Garage Sale at http://www.facebook.com/naturescradle, where we have proudly managed to raise funds for 7 worthy charities including Heartkids of SA, Angels for the Forgotten, Starlight Children’s Foundation, the Childhood Cancer Association, ChildFund Australia, Backpacks 4 Aussie Kids and Heartfelt.

But we have even more exciting news on a personal note…. I am pregnant!  After a long time of trying, and after experiencing loss, I am now pregnant again with baby number 3.  I will enjoy sharing with you all as I gather my little nest here.  One thing I have really noticed at Nature’s Cradle, is that the products available have incredibly evolved and grown.  We are absolutely spoiled for choice these days, so I will have some real beauties to show you.

x Linda Quintion – Nature’s Cradle Owner/Manager.

I often say that I could fill a store the size of David Jones if only I had the space, a warehouse sized space would be heaven to me.  Imagine all the space you could want to display all of the amazing product finds, space for groups, play areas, offices for the girls who put in all of the hard work behind the scenes… I dream of it.  But we still have grown, and rather quickly, when I think of the small store we started with, our store now is beautiful and much bigger, in a lovely area.

But, I do get carried away when I find beautiful things, I get a bit excited.  I find so many incredible products.  Beautiful, ethical, ones that make me say ‘ooooh what a fantastic idea’.  So tomorrow night, in time for Christmas, I hope to help lots of customers find those amazing Christmas gifts, by offering a store full of my amazing finds at the most amazing prices.

We are offering a storewide discount, plus we are filling the store with as much stock as we can at prices as low as we can go.  It will be very exciting.

Right in time whe have had an extra Cash Register installed, they are white with a blue glow light around the sides of the screen so that the girls don’t get tired eyes.  They match perfectly with our colour scheme.

So it will be an exciting night tomorrow night.  Hopefully many people will come away thrilled about their bargain/beautiful finds, and we will end up with a clean slate so I can get carried away finding more beautiful things once again!

At Nature’s Cradle we focus on Fair Trade, Environmentally Friendly, and our favourite Australian Made products.  We love Australian Made, not only because the products do not have to travel as far to get to our stores which is better for the environment, they are also more unique, better quality, and it is a nice feeling knowing that no child slavery or unfair wages have been involved.

Some of our favourites include -

  • Made by Meg in Adelaide – Hairclips, Headbands, Bows:

There is such a lot that happens around or gorgeous little Village.  We are a stones throw from the city centre, yet the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, just like you are escaping to a Village.  It is wonderful that there is such a vast array of stores and businesses all in our little strip, so you can practically get all of your shopping done in one stop, plus take care of your Health needs and even go to the Library.

We are becoming our own little Eco Village, as all within walking distance we now have -

  • Nature’s Cradle – Australia’s favourite Organic Baby & Family stores
  • Waste Not Want Not – An ecclectic mix of Eco Friendly products for the home
  • Levant – a fashion store specialising in Eco Friendly and Fair Trade clothing
  • Organic Fruits and Vegetables at our local Fruit Store
  • Crystals, Gemstones and services over at Eternal Spirit
  • The gorgeous Brown Dog Cafe
  • Amazing Wooden Furniture over at the Bali Store
  • Eggless Cafe has a exciting range of vegan, gluten free and other delicious desserts.
  • Of course the Library is the best form of recycling, lending books and toys and then giving them back for others to share… and I know that they even have the amazing Wooden Balance Bikes to lend as well as some gorgeous Wooden Toys
  • Even the local supermarket has some Organic and Gluten Free ranges
  • and the list goes on….

Not only do we have an amazing selection of businesses and stores, we also hold Street Fairs a couple of times a year.  They run right from the Tram Line, South through the main shopping precinct.  They feature stalls with an amazing array of handmade items, and this Christmas Fair that will be on tomorrow 27th November 2010, we are having the Goody Trail where customers will get to collect goodies from businesses all along the strip, as well as be in the draw for a $2,000- Holiday Voucher and more.  A great family activity.

So an exciting day ahead!

Here is a photo of the outside of our shop for the fair this time last year.

Each Monday we host a free Workshops and Group Get Togethers especially for Mothers, and parents.  We often focus on particular topics such as Natural Birthing, Cloth Nappies & EC, Babywearing, and generally have a lovely chat and sharing of ideas.

Our store is a perfect location, as it offers an opportunity to safely check out the group in a public forum.  When we want to move away from the store and its play areas, there are so many lovely locations nearby such as Playgrounds, Parks, Cafe’s, the Tram to the City or Glenelg, even the gorgeous Capri Theatres.

Last Monday the 15th November was a big turnout, our store was full.  I did a presentation on Elimination Communication, and we all shared ideas.  It was really interesting and enjoyable.  Though you would never know what goes on behind the scenes while I keep my cool…. staff becoming ill and on holidays all at the same time so two of us had to try to look after the store during the presentation with toddlers on hips, of course the toddlers decided to be clingy right at that time.  Then the computers went down, so no Cash Register.  Oh the stress.  But you know, these things quite often happen in business, and I think we are now so good at pretending nothing is wrong!

But all is well again!  So every Monday at 10.30am, we continue to meet.  Personally I think it is wonderful to be able to come into store and just sit and chat with everybody and get to know our visitors on an even more personal level.  We are a non judgemental group, open for parents of children of any age, or parents to be, so it is a nice and relaxed get together where we can feel open to be ourselves and ask/share whatever we like.

Hope to see you there soon if you are in Adelaide.  Do you live elsewhere?  If so contact me at members@naturescradle.com.au , and we can talk about setting up a group for you!

To market to market…. Adelaide has suddenly exploded with Markets.  On Sunday we had available – Lollipop Markets (gorgeous boutique markets that we attended), Vegan Festival, something on in the Hills, something in Glenelg… and that is just to name a few.  We are spoiled aren’t we?

We chose to go to the Lollipop Markets this time, and wow was it a good one!  For a first time Market there sure was some foot traffic, and it was in a lovely location, The Shores at West Beach.

This first picture is taken from our stand, looking out at the crowd.

It was so busy in there... this picture is taken from our stand looking out at the crowd.

And this photo is looking back at our stand.  Emma is serving, and you might recognise her as she works on Wednesday and Friday each week.  It is so busy that we can’t actually see our stand!

Before the Market we were excitedly waiting to bring out some new Handmade in South Australia items, including -

These toys are handmade in South Australia, and are naturally oiled.  There are Fences, mini Vehicles, a Bus filled with people, Farm Machines, little handknitted Chickens and more!

And another treasure, handmade in South Australia again, baby dresses made from new and recycled materials.  They are soooo stunning.  We love that they can be worn in Winter or Summer.

We look forward to the next market in February.  Meanwhile we will be at the Mums and Bubs Market in Seaford in December, and you will start to see us pop up at many others around Adelaide.

My son’s birthday falls on Halloween.  My glorious Homebirth VBAC, producing the most delightful little boy I could ever hope for.  Since then we have been celebrating Halloween.

Now when I mention that word to many people they roll their eyes, and proclaim ‘but that is a silly American tradition’.  While I certainly would never have anything Halloween in our stores, as we believe that branded commercialised products should not be filling the imaginative minds of little ones when they go out shopping with mum, at home we have a little fun with this now.

Quite frankly, Australia is so young it is still forming its traditions.  If it wasn’t for the fact that a couple of hundred years ago it was ok to sail to a new country, declare it as your own, before murdering/enslaving/raping its inhabitants (Aboriginals) and stealing their children, millions of us would not be in this country now.  While there is nothing we can do to reverse the past, and apart from trying to embrace the wonderful Aboriginal culture where it is allowed, we now have come to Australia from all over the world, so who is to say that Halloween is less welcome than wearing green to celebrate the Irish once each year?

We don’t adourn the house in freaky things to scare the children, in fact when we Trick or Treat we go out in Fairy and Wizard outfits.  It is the Trick or Treating that we most love about Halloween, and this is the bit that we embrace in our family.  I think it is a most wonderful concept.  Yes fine, children get treats, it is only an occasional thing!  But the wonderful thing about Trick or Treating is that in our current society where sadly we stay within our own boxes (homes) and have lost the sense of community, Trick or Treating allows us to meet the families around our neighbourhood.  We get a glimpse of who lives behind that door, even if only for a second and a laugh.

So we will continue to Trick or Treat around our neighbourhood to celebrate our son’s birthday and Halloween, every October 31st.  Some neighbours like it, some don’t, but at least we get to see them once a year now!

And what does a Nature’s Cradle boy get for his birthday?  Well with ethical toys, they are not mass produced and available year after year, so when I see something I love, I will grab one if possible and hold it aside.  I have been holding this glorious Wooden Pirate Ship for a couple of years, waiting for him to be old enough.  This year he got it.  And out of all of his different gifts, some branded some not, the Pirate Ship is his delight.

Picture will come…. seem to have misplaced my camera :(   but will come and add it here when found.

Today Nature’s Cradle are hosting the South Australian event for Reusable Nappy Week.  I am so excited!!!  I can’t wait to see everybody, I can’t wait to talk ‘nappy’, and I can’t wait to hear the nappy talk given by the wonderful women joining us for the event.

I am going into store this morning, without any of my little ones pulling at my Sari Skirt.  I will get to talk to people with out a mummy confused mind, well that is the theory anyway!

I am so excited about the prospect of helping more parents try some cloth, whether it be 1 single nappy, or a whole full time package, just to know that from one busy event alone, we might be pulling literally hundreds, possibly thousands of disposable nappies (think about it, several nappies a day per child, even one parent converted to cloth will mean thousands of disposable nappies) out of landfill, chemicals off their babies.  This is what makes every bit of effort worth it.

I LOVE talking nappies.  I love helping parents with information, I love seeing them go home excitedly to try out their new treasures, and I love hearing how well they have worked.

But nappies are not always as simple as buy one, take it home, use it, happy happy joy joy.  Sometimes, like all nappies… even disposables… they can leak.

I think that your success in getting nappies to work for you, has a lot to do with your attitude.  Weird thing to say?  Well really, when I am using nappies, when I try one out, if a nappy doesn’t seem to be holding in the wetness, whether it be a new nappy I am trying for the first time, or a nappy that has worked wonderfully up until now, I stop and look at why.  It is easy, especially when you are a tired mum, to say ‘oh this nappy doesn’t work, it is hopeless’.  But so many contributing factors can make a nappy leak.  And I am a firm believer that you can get practically any reputable nappy brand to ‘work’ to some level, if you work with your nappy.

Here are some of the things that I look at when a nappy doesn’t seem to be working -

  • Have you washed your nappy enough times?  Bamboo/Hemp fabrics especially, but even some Cottons, can have build up from the manufacturing process.  There are oils, and things that basically clog up your nappy, and until you have washed it enough to get them out, your nappy doesn’t absorb enough.  So if your nappy leaks and you have only washed it a couple, or even a few times, wash it more!!!  Put it in with some weekend loads if you wish, you don’t always have to dry it in between washes.  You cannot fully know how well a nappy works for you until it has been washed at least a dozen times.
  • Have you got it fitting nice and tightly around the legs and the waist?  If using a fitted nappy with a separate cover, the cover is what needs to fit tightly.  I know it can seem like the nappy is pulling at baby’s skin, and sometimes leaves a red mark on the skin, but you will know if something is actually hurting your baby.  As an example, are you wearing pants or a skirt with a waist band?  If so, pull the waist band away from your skin, can you see a red mark?  Does it hurt you?  No?  Well that is the same for a nappy, you need that firm fit to stop leaks, not so much that it hurts, but of course something against your baby’s skin is going to leave a mark sometimes.
  • How many absorbent fabrics do you have?  Perhaps you could add a little more if the nappy isn’t lasting as long as you want before leaking.  Just make sure you don’t add so much that you make a leg gap by pushing the cover out too far.  How to tell if you need more absorbent fabrics?  When the nappy leaks, have a feel right through your whole nappy.  Can you feel wetness through all layers.  Is the wetness right up from the back to the front?  If yes, then simply your nappy is absorbing well, and your baby has just done enough wee to fill the nappy.  Great, now you know how long between changes for this type of nappy, or add more absorbent fabrics if you want it to be longer.
  • However, if when your nappy leaks there are parts that are only mildly damp, or not damp at all, yet the nappy is saturated in other areas and leaking, then the nappy might not be absorbing well enough for your baby.   What does this mean?
    A) The fabrics in the nappy are maybe not ideal for the way your baby wee’s.   To explain, if you have slow absorbing fabrics, such as Hemp/Bamboo, and your baby holds on and then has a strong powerful wee, these fabrics may not grab it fast enough before it comes pouring out.  In that case, adding some Cotton or microfiber as the top layer may help grab the wee, before it then more slowly soaks into the moisture holding fabrics of Hemp/Bamboo below.
    OR
    B) Your nappy may have a soap build up and cannot absorb properly, which means it needs some strip washing.  Or you haven’t washed it enough as above and it can’t absorb yet.
  • What is your baby doing when the nappy leaks?  This question is important in particular when using Microfiber.  When using Microfiber, if you are doing an activity that puts pressure on the nappy, such as wearing your baby in a fabulous Ergo Baby Carrier, then the pressure on a wet nappy can push the moisture out.  So for babywearing in this type of carrier, Cotton/Hemp/Bamboo are best.  For a light nappy running around in the afternoon, Microfiber is great.

There are so many factors in choosing the ‘right nappy for you’.  There isn’t a right nappy for everybody, otherwise we could just sell one brand of nappy and be done with it!  Where some will have great success with a Cushie Tushies Bamboo nappy, others will find that leaks for them and will have great success with a Mommy’s Touch Microfiber nappy, and Vice Versa.

Does this make you put your hands up in the air and say “Noooo, how will I ever choose then?”, do not stress!  If you work with your nappy, you can buy any nappy.  If you try one with Microfiber for example, and it leaks for you, and you are using it for afternoons running around, and you don’t have soap build up, and the nappy is wet from front to back… then the nappy is working properly and if you want it to last longer it simply needs some absorbent fabrics added such as Cotton or Bamboo/Hemp added to it by the way of a booster.  See, that is ‘working with your nappy’.

In the end, whether you buy one brand and choose to work with it, or buy a whole mixture, you can get them working for you.  You may realise that a brand of nappies only holds for a short while on your baby, so more frequent nappy changes with that brand, and  you might only like to use it for running around at home.  It doesn’t mean the nappy doesn’t work for you, it just means that at this time (Because believe me it continually changes!  What works for baby now, can change down the track as they change the way they wee) that nappy is a run around during the day nappy, and for night you either boost it up if there is room, or use a different nappy.

I always remind everybody, that a nappy is simply a piece of cloth to soak up moisture.  It doesn’t matter what form or shape it comes in, make sure it fits properly, and work with the fabrics.  If your nappy doesn’t last long on your baby, after looking at all of the above, then consider it a run around in the afternoon nappy!
